How to Get a Subreddit without Meeting Reddit Requirements

Almost everyone knows what Reddit is–a popular discussion site full of random posts and general silliness. And if you know what Reddit is, chances are you know what subreddits are–certain categories on the site that are used to organize posts by topic.

For example, https://www.reddit.com/r/help is the location of the help subreddit.

What a lot of people don’t know is that it is possible for anyone to make their own subreddit, but there are some restrictions.

  • Your Reddit account must be at least 30 days old.
  • Your Reddit account must have an unspecified minimum amount of positive karma.

More information about creating a subreddit can be found at https://www.reddit.com/r/help/wiki/faq#wiki_creating_subreddits.

I made a new account on Reddit and wanted to have my very own subreddit, but those restrictions stopped me from being able to. However, I have found a way to acquire a subreddit without meeting those requirements.

There is a subreddit called Adopt a Reddit where people post subreddits that they no longer want to maintain. Even though a new Reddit account cannot make a new subreddit, it is possible for anyone to take over an already existing subreddit. All you have to do is find a subreddit with a name that you like and reply to the post in Adopt a Reddit saying that you want to have the subreddit.

Keep in mind that you should have a good user history in Reddit or the current owner might not give you the subreddit.

Tip: For those that are interested in being a moderator of an already existing subreddit but not the actual owner, there is a subreddit called Need A Mod that will allow you to apply to be a moderator for a subreddit.

You can request to become a mod of a defunct or abandoned subreddit on RedditRequest.
