The National Center for Health Research states that over 71 million American households have a pet, and that most people think of their pets as members of their family. Pets are one of our best teachers. They teach our kids responsibility, as they need to learn how to take care of them and be responsible for their pets safety. However, this is not the only thing pets teach. Mary Renck Jalongo, an education professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and author of The World of Children and Their Companion Animals, says pets can help the development of kids. Many people know that pets are useful for helping developmentally challenged kids learn. However, pets can be used to help any kid learn. Children are more relaxed around animals, and can learn easier due to their lower stress levels.

Reason 2: Pets Comfort

It is no secret that having a pet can comfort you and reduce anxiety levels. Researchers at the University of California Davis have concluded that Alzheimer’s patients suffer less stress and have fewer anxious outbursts if there is a dog or cat in the home. Pets are there to comfort us without asking any questions.

Reason 3: Pets Build Family Bonds

A pet is often the center of the family. Everyone takes the dog for a walk, or shares in grooming and feeding him, or gets down on the floor and plays with him. This socializing can lead to stronger bonds within your family. Spending time with your pet and family can ease the stress of this fast-paced modern world.

Reason 4: Pets Keep People Healthy

Pets are often the one and only reason people can be forced to go on a walk in this modern world. The National Center for Health Research states that a 2002 study showed that people with dogs or cats had lower resting heart rates and blood pressure measures. Pets also ease stress, which can lead to better overall health. Pets can also decrease your cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, and feelings of loneliness which all lead to a longer lifespan.

Reason 5: Pets are Just Fun!

There is nothing like cuddling with your cat, or running with your dog. There is just something about pets that just make us happy. You, your family, and even random strangers will all laugh and have fun with your pet.
